Christian Preachers Attacked in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua; Eight Police Officers Suspended for Inaction
Video shows police failing to stop mob assault on missionaries; main accused identified as local BJP leader.
Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district suspended eight police officers after a violent attack on a group of Christian preachers was caught on camera. The video, which went viral on social media, shows police standing by as armed men assaulted the preachers’ vehicle.
The attack happened on Thursday evening, October 23, in Juthana village under Rajbagh police station. Around 10 to 15 Christian missionaries were traveling in a Tempo Traveller when several young men armed with sticks and metal rods surrounded the vehicle. The attackers, some with covered faces, smashed windows, damaged the vehicle, and beat both men and women passengers.
A Christian leader said the missionaries had come from outside the region and were invited by a local pastor to hold a small prayer meeting. “As they were leaving, a group of Hindu nationalist activists attacked them. The vehicle was badly damaged, and the group was beaten severely,” he said.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohita Sharma immediately suspended one sub-inspector and seven Special Police Officers for failing to intervene during the assault. They now face disciplinary action.
Police have identified the main accused as Ravindra Singh, also known as “Thela,” a local BJP leader with a criminal record. He and his associates are accused of leading the mob. One suspect has been arrested, while others are still being hunted.
An FIR has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, for offences including assault, unlawful assembly, criminal intimidation, property damage, and breach of peace. Sections of the Arms Act have also been added.
Officials said they are taking the matter very seriously. “Both the attack and the police negligence are unacceptable. The suspended officers will face strict action,” a police spokesperson said.
Security has been tightened in the area to maintain peace and prevent further violence.
Christians make up less than one percent of Jammu and Kashmir’s population, but the region has seen several attacks against the community in recent years. Incidents of violence were reported earlier in 2018 and 2006, targeting converts and pastors.
